William Pryke was born in Fordham (Newmarket Q3-1891 3B:519), son of Frederick and Harriet PRYKE (née HARVEY).
1901 census...Aged 9, he was at Church Street, Fordham with his single brother Frederick PRYKE [24] bricklayer, his mother, widowed Harriet PRYKE [44] and brother Arthur [14] bricklayer's labourer. All were born in Fordham. His father Frederick PRYKE, born 1843, a farm labourer, had died in 1895, aged 52. 1911 census...Aged 19, a farm labourer, he was at Church Street, Fordham with his mother and brother Arthur (farm labourer). |

He enlisted in Newmarket.
from Lt Col Murphy's "History of the Suffolk Regiment: "The 7th Suffolks took over trenches west of Pozières on 3rd August. On the 8th the Germans captured about 80 yards of Ration trench but that evening the Battalion retook it and gained an additionaL 200 yards. The CWGC records that the battalion lost 50 killed on the 9th August 1916, only 7 having identified graves.
